we have the power to change the course of history.... one child at a time

A history built upon the generations provides a solid foundation of trust and excellence.

While it is true that the LORD certainly speaks to individuals in each generation, the Biblical pattern of HIS ways is manifested when we understand that HE is a GOD of the generations. God often spoke to an individual in one generation, yet did not fulfill HIS word until the next generation. The LORD spoke to King David about the temple, but it was Solomon who built it. In the case of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, it took three generations before the LORD brought forth the full dimensions of HIS promises to Abraham. However, once that fullness of GOD's time arrived HE moved quickly to fulfill HIS word.

The history of The LORD'S Child is founded upon two generations and it all began in the Spring of 1967. Gene Wolfenbarger was a young child, not quite four years old at the time. The LORD spoke to Gene's mother concerning the care of young children through the means of an orphanage. His mother had been raised in an orphanage during the first ten years of her life. With each passing year, the reality of what became known as "the orphanage" not only became a certainty fixed in her heart, but the seed of caring for children was planted and cultivated in the hearts of the four Wolfenbarger children.

As a young boy, Gene was constantly exposed to his mother's vision. When the family dined with other pastors, missionaries, or those in full-time ministry, one of the most frequent dinner topic pertained to updated plans for "the orphanage." Gene accompanied his mother and siblings to visit the orphanage in Lubbock, Texas, his mother's childhood home. It was through her influence that an orphanage was looked upon as a good thing by Gene and not some horrible experience like the literary orphanages in a Dickens' novel. Gene also accompanied his mother when she visited numerous orphanages in cities throughout America. He went to sleep at night with bedtime stories of the miracles of provision that happened at the George Mueller orphanage in Bristol, England in the 1800s.

Through a spiritual osmosis, Gene gradually absorbed the reality of America's compassion for children as he witnessed both pastors and lay people expressing their desire to help. As a young teenager, Gene listened to the stories about the LORD awakening people in the middle of the night and impressing them with the need to sacrificially help care for children. By the time Gene entered the ministry, the seed of "the orphanage" had sprouted into a flower with a different fragrance of that envisioned by his mother, but the roots remained the same. "The orphanage" of Gene's mother underwent a spiritual transformation and became a new word to a new generation, a distinct vision of caring for children trapped in the overwhelming cycle of poverty.

The orphanage seed from forty years ago was harvested in 2007 when a non-profit, Christian humanitarian organization called The LORD'S Child was born.

The organization was birthed upon a strong and trustworthy foundation, a generational promise that offers hope to the most vulnerable among us - children.
