Child Sponsorship FAQ's

What is Child Sponsorship and how does it work?
Child Sponsorship is an opportunity for you to connect with one special child, or a group of children, if you so generously choose. Your monthly financial support assists your child and the children in their community to be fed, clothed, educated, protected, to enjoy good health, and to love GOD and their neighbors.

History teaches that to change a child's life effectively, we need to change the community and the world in which he lives. We do this by establishing a network of "care and prevention" for the child within his community. Your sponsorship of a child assists the community.

How does The LORD's Child work within the village or community for the Child Sponsorship program?
We work with many people who will contribute to the well-being of the child you sponsor, which includes their families, churches within the communities, various groups and organizations, even their government. Rather than offering the fix of a temporary handout, we work alongside the people in a community to address issues that are the most important to them, such as building or restoring wells, building and renovating schools and health clinics and training in better agricultural methods. Experience has
proven the best solution to poverty is teaching and helping people to care for
themselves as a community.

How long will I be able to sponsor the same child?
Hopefully, until the child graduates from high school, which is usually between the ages of 18-22, depending upon the country. However, when dealing with Third World children, history tells us we can lose contact with a child through death, disease, armed conflict, family migration, natural disasters, etc.

What if my child moves or leaves the program?
One of the joys of sponsorship (much like that of a parent) is the opportunity of watching your special child develop and mature over the years. There are times, however, when a child moves, or is withdrawn from the program. We will make every effort to notify you as soon as possible, if we become aware of such an event. We hope you will choose another child to sponsor and continue the network of "care and prevention" in the life of another innocent child trapped in poverty.

May I visit my sponsored child?
It depends upon the child's location, but visiting your child is possible. We offer regular TLC Mission Trips to the areas of child sponsorship. We want you to develop a relationship with your sponsored child(ren) and our trips offer both of you an unforgettable experience.

Call us at 865-868-5200 for more information on how you can book your spot on an upcoming mission trip.

Why doesn't The LORD's Child offer Child Sponsorship in the United States?
We started our humanitarian work by caring for impoverished children right here in American Appalachia. Our love and concern extends to all children everywhere because they are the most vulnerable and defenseless against the world's evils. The LORD's Child will continue to offer hope and encouragement to American children through our many community-based initiatives.

Will I be the exclusive sponsor of the child or children I select?
The LORD’s Child believes the hub of positive change in the Third World should be the Village. The individual child is best served by creating a permanent community infrastructure around him. Rather than following the traditional humanitarian path of short-term relief, our goal is to build a village in which the basic needs of the child are met on a self-sustaining basis for generations to come.

The children whose images and stories appear for sponsorship are representative of the hundreds of other children in their village who are equally deserving of your assistance, even those yet unborn. It is therefore necessary that each featured child receive multiple sponsorships on behalf of all their brothers, sisters, cousins, and neighbors whose faces remain hidden in poverty.
