Statistics of Poverty for States Located Within the Appalachian Region

Kentucky:

 
A child is born into poverty every 34 minutes.
23.9% live in poverty.
10.9% live in extreme poverty.

 

Tennessee:

 
The rate of child poverty increased 2 times the national average in 2008.
42.6% of children receive free or reduced lunch.
Child abuse rate went from 4.5% in 2002 to 12.2% in 2005.

 

West Virginia:

 
30.5% of children under the age of 5 live in poverty.
24.9% of children are classified as neglected.
42.5% of children live at or below the federal poverty level.
