"Carli's never had a brand new pair of Nike shoes before and the kids were so excited when they laced them up and ran outside to show them off to their friends." Christie Breeden, mother of four, explains as she motions to Carli to show us her new shoes. With a proud look on her face, Carli holds her pink Nike shoes in front of her. "These are mine" Carli says, "I picked them out myself." The smile on Carli's face is infectious and everyone in the room begins to smile. JJ and Will, Carli's brothers, are eagerly waiting behind Carli to show off their new shoes as well. Then it's back outside to put some mileage on their new shoes.
Christie begins to explain how difficult it's been just getting by. "My husband has worked for the same company for 17 years. Recently, the company had to scale back in order to continue to operate. We're thankful he's still working, although his hours have been cut way back. At times we've had trouble paying our bills. Buying the kids clothes and shoes doesn't take priority over keeping the lights on," she admitted.
Christie pauses and looks down at the floor, "Then my cousin gave me a postcard she received from The LORD's Child. It was right before school started and we were able to get our kids the clothes and school supplies they needed-- ALL NEW CLOTHES. The kids were so excited!"
Christie went on to say, "Since that first event, The LORD's Child has also helped us with clothes and shoes for Christmas and Easter. You know it's not easy being in this situation and it can be hard on the kids. I know many can't imagine how a new pair of shoes can brighten a child's day. I guess to a lot of people new shoes are taken for granted. But in tough times they become a source of pride to a child. And with four children I can honestly say, 'It's amazing what a new pair of shoes can do.' Thank you, LORD's Child!"
